The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
